Armed Felons Jailed with Our Community’s Use of the Ring Doorbell

Less than 24 hours after all four of our cars were broken into in the driveway of our affluent and guarded neighborhood, I woke up to the headlines, “Three Arrested After Two County, High Speed Pursuit Ends in Nashville.” What we had originally brushed off as a teenage prank become much more serious after I received a call from our neighborhood security guard. This was not a teenage prank but a serious crime spree organized by armed criminals.

As the mother of seven children, my husband and I take every precaution when it comes to the safety of our children. We childproofed our home, secured three different barriers to prevent children from accessing a pool and installed the Ring Video Doorbell 2 with Chime Pro and Ring Assist. The majority of the time, our Ring Doorbell 2 notifies me of a delivery at the front door or allows me to see or talk to my teens when they arrive home at night. On one occasion, it gave me a clear view of the local kids playing “ding dong ditch” on my doorstep that I then reposted in the Ring app to alert unaware parents of the unsafe behavior of their children. In a more entertaining moment, our Ring Video Doorbell caught the behind the scenes action of HGTV’s Property Brothers who filmed an episode of their show in our home. Although we left to allow the crew to have a closed set, we were thoroughly entertained by the clear audio and video moments that were captured that day. While our Ring doorbell is an important safety feature in our home, like many families, we never thought we’d have to use it to catch gun-toting felons.

Just two short months ago, I opened my car door one morning to find the overhead light not on upon entry. In the two seconds that it took me to notice that something was off, I noticed that my center console and glove compartment were open and trashed. I ran back into the house and quickly called police. Although I was the first to file a report, the notices on our Ring app started alerting us of more burglaries in the area as the hours went on. While our Ring captured the vehicles used in the burglary, our neighbor’s Ring Doorbell and Ring Spotlight camera caught clear video of one man breaking into cars while two men stood at the end of the driveway. Another neighbor posted a Ring video in the Ring Neighbors app that was so clear, you could see the details in the yellow and black Nike shoes that the thief was wearing. Needless to say, the next afternoon, we got a call from police to tell us that the men had been caught and arrested.

After breaking into several cars in multiple neighborhoods, they were chased by police after they stole guns and a car from another home, although they were also found to have guns in their possession. Chills ran though my body as I realized that felons with guns were in my driveway as my children slept. Multiple Ring videos confirmed that they were at my home at 12:15am, not as late as I would suspect these types of crimes to occur. Thankfully, my Ring Doorbell 2 assisted in putting these men in jail as multiple neighbors using the system unknowingly united to stop further crime.

Although this post is sponsored, I previously shared our experience with Ring on Instagram one week after this incident occurred as a way to spread awareness. (I saved in on my Instagram highlights because so many people requested it.) I genuinely feel Ring is a must have security monitor that will protect your home and loved ones. The newer Ring Doorbell 2 has upgraded the video quality to 1080p and made improvements in the night vision which allow for a very clear video. It also has live view, adjustable motion zones, a rechargeable battery and two-way audio. With motion alerts that are sent to your phone and the ability to talk through the doorbell in real time, an unsuspecting visitor knows you are watching and recording. The Ring neighborhood crime alerts allow residents in your town to work together to keep your community a safer place to live. Shop the post and invest in the Ring Doorbell 2 ($189.95) for the safety of your family!
